What does a car service include?

What service does my car need?

What is a Full Car Service?

We offer two types of regular servicing - the first of these being a Full Service.

Otherwise known as a Minor Service, a Full Service is effectively your typical annual car service, and is due every 12 months or 12,000 miles (whichever comes first).

Getting a full service on a car sees many comprehensive checks carried out on your car, from checks on the steering and suspension to the car’s gearbox.

Not only that, but a full car service sees your oil, oil filter and air filter all changed for new components.

What is a Major Car Service?

A Major Car Service is recommended to be taken out every 24 months or 24,000 miles (whichever comes first) to give your car a full refresh, as well as undertake additional checks.

Everything that is completed as part of a Full Car Service is completed during a Major Car Service, as well as additional checks to ensure every aspect of your vehicle has been covered.

One such part of a Major Service can be having the spark plugs changed - or fuel filters if you own a diesel - though this may come at an additional cost depending on the type fitted.

What is a Manufacturer service?

As previously mentioned, keeping up to date with your car servicing is very important in preserving your manufacturer warranty.

Anyone buying a new car will find that they get a minimum three years’ warranty and, in order to keep it valid, you must take your car in for its annual manufacturer service at an approved service centre.

This enables manufacturer-trained technicians to check the car over in a thorough manner and to manufacturer standards, ensuring no components are wearing out and could cause issues when out on the road.

Not only that, but when replacing consumables as part of a manufacturer service, the technicians will only use materials approved by the manufacturer in question - as well as only using techniques they have been instructed to use as part of their training.

You can continue to keep up to date with manufacturer servicing beyond your warranty period, helping your car obtain a Full Service History (FSH) that will pay off when you look to part exchange or sell your vehicle.

What is a car service?

Regular vehicle maintenance, such as car servicing, is vital in keeping your car’s condition at its best.

Booking a car service not only ensures consumable parts are replaced, but can also identify any issues that can be addressed before they make any impact.

Additionally, keeping your manufacturer warranty intact will require you to get your car serviced each year - it will also help keep value in your car if you can say it’s got a full manufacturer service history.

Here at Stoneacre, we offer a DVSA-approved service centre at every one of our branches - any of which you can book a car service at via our online facility.

Not only that, but with strong manufacturer backing at each dealership, you can rest easy knowing your car service is being handled by specially-trained technicians.

How often should you service your car?

A general rule of thumb is that you service a car every 12 months or 12,000 miles - whichever comes first - however, it's also important to check with your manufacturer's guidelines, as they can sometimes be quite specific.

You can, if you like - especially if you’re a high-mileage driver - have your car serviced every six months with an Interim Service.

How much does a car service cost?

For anyone wanting to know the cost of a car service, there's no one answer to that question, as every car will be different.

However, thanks to our online booking form, you’ll be able to see the cost of your car service before you book, plus costs for any additional treatments you may wish to add.

There are multiple factors that can influence car service prices, including:

  • Make and model of the car
  • Age of the car
  • The car’s mileage
  • Whether a Full or Major Service is due

You will typically find that there are brands where car servicing costs are typically higher, while others will benefit from lower service pricing.

The likes of Volvo, BMW and Mercedes could have above average servicing prices, but names such as Suzuki, Fiat and Dacia possibly offer a more cost-effective experience.

For example: a 2020 Fiat 500 due for its third manufacturer service would cost £167 - however, a 2020 Volvo XC40 also due its third service would cost £330.*

Your car’s engine size and any related complexities will also be deciding factors to the cost of any service you have. As a result, performance-based vehicles will typically see higher servicing costs, but owners of city cars with an engine not much bigger than 1,000cc will enjoy smaller prices.

It is also prudent to consider that, if anything is discovered during your car service which needs immediate attention, then there will likely be subsequent costs to make the necessary repairs.

How long does a car service take?

Typically, a Full Service will take anywhere up to three hours depending on the type of car you have, while a Major Service will take just a bit longer so that the extra checks can be completed.

At Stoneacre, a common scenario when it comes to servicing your car is to drop it off at your local Service Centre first thing in the morning - then one of our technicians will be in touch a matter of hours later to say the service is complete, and you can come to collect your car.

If the situation arises that your car is recommended for reapirs after the checks have unearthed an issue or two, then we may ba able to complete these on the day - if such repairs are particularly complex or parts need ordering, then we can arrange for you to return your car to us to facilitate those.

Do you really have to regularly service your car?

While there is no legal requirement to service your car, it is worth bearing in mind that regularly servicing your car has a number of benefits for your car and your wallet:
